CALGARY – Bringing a child into the world is one of the most rewarding experiences of a lifetime for most parents; unfortunately, pregnancies can sometimes turn to heart break instead.
Alison Casey’s son was just 18 weeks when he was born and 18 weeks when his parent’s had to say goodbye.
“He was still real, still mine. He didn’t cry or any of those things but he was still real.”
Harrison Grayson’s mother still wears his initials on her wrist. He died before he even had a chance to come into the world.
“The grief was all consuming. I was off work for a couple months,” says Wanda Weiser.
One in four pregnancies end in miscarriage – for every 160 healthy babies born, one will be stillborn.
Wanda and Alison are two of many mothers who have experienced the devastating loss. Both confess they never felt so alone.
Now, a new website is bringing women like Wanda and Alison together.
“Somebody mentioned it at one of the support group meetings and I immediately went on it and I spent HOURS on it,” says Alison.
The site allows each woman to share their story, whether their loss occurred early in the pregnancy or after their baby was born. It’s a public forum to share and support and a simple way to lift feelings of isolation.
“I had some people by reading my story, they would come to me and say – oh now they actually realized what it is that I lost – that it wasn’t just a fetus. I lost my son and his future,” says Wanda.
The website can be found at www.facesofloss.com.
