Man hit and killed by train in Banff

RCMP in Banff are investigating after a man was hit and killed by a train Tuesday afternoon.

CP Rail spokesperson Kevin Hrysak confirms it happened around 4:20 p.m.

An eastbound train hit 27-year-old Eduardo Godoy from Chile was walking between the rails near the Buffalo Street crossing, just east of the Banff train station.

Hrysak says the crew sounded the train’s horn, blew the whistle and applied the emergency braking system but was unable to stop the train.

Emergency crews were immediately called to the scene, but the victim was pronounced dead on scene.

RCMP say it appears the victim was wearing headphones at the time and didn't hear the train coming.

Hrysak says the CP crew was relieved of their duties and is being offered emergency stress counseling.

Last week, a Leduc teen was killed by a train after walking on the tracks with headphones on. He was not able to hear the train coming before he was hit.
