Calgary police have charged two people with trafficking ecstasy in our city, the same day they announced an eighth death from PMMA.

Members of the Calgary police Drug Unit say they were able to purchase drugs said to be ecstasy, during an undercover operation.

The drugs were sent to a crime lab and have been confirmed to contain paramethoxymethamphetamine, also known as PMMA.

Police obtained search warrants for a northwest home and arrested a man and woman from the residence.

Investigators seized a total of 823.4 grams of powdered ecstasy, including four capsules, with a street value of approximately $16,460. A collapsible baton, two knives and cash were also seized.

19-year-old Joshua Bradly Cook is facing 23 charges, including nine counts of trafficking ecstasy.

19-year-old Elizabeth Thomas facing three charges, including three counts of trafficking ecstasy.

Calgary police say they are concerned for the wellbeing of any member of the public who may have purchased illegal drugs from Cook or Thomas, so they’re taking the uncommon step of releasing photos of the two accused.

Police are adamant that this arrest in no way eliminates the risk associated with illegal street drugs, especially ecstasy.

Today, police also confirmed an eighth death in Calgary in connection with PMMA.

A 37-year-old man was pronounced dead last month when EMS arrived on scene at a northeast home for reports of a man in distress.

Two others in the home, a man and woman, were rushed to hospital and have since been released.
