Sky High
Michelle Krsek was killed nearly three months ago when an unsecured piece of sheet metal blew off the top of a high-rise construction project in the downtown core. Michelle was walking with her family when the massive piece of scrap metal fell onto her and her father. The tragedy resulted in charges under the Safety Codes Act to the building’s owner, contractor and subcontractor. The occupational health and safety investigation is still ongoing.
The little girl’s death prompted a massive safety review by the city, but in the days and weeks that followed, there were more reports of falling debris from high-rise projects.
Safety has clearly become a big concern for many Calgarians; so much so, that Global News began getting emails from viewers, suggesting a much bigger problem - drug and alcohol use on the job.
In our special series “Sky High”, Global News conducts its own investigation into drug and alcohol use on the job, including a candid conversation with an industry inside who admits, it happens a whole lot more than the general public knows.
