Calgarian shot while vacationing in Mexico
CALGARY – Another Canadian has been shot while vacationing in Mexico.
For the past six years, Sharon and Yves Guay of Calgary have vacationed in an RV park in the popular resort area of Mazatlan.
Last night around 11.00 PM, Sharon says she heard a light tapping on the door. When her husband went to investigate, he found two men, one holding a gun.
“The first guy charged, to try and push his way into the motor home. My husband knew he couldn’t come in, because then we’d both be dead. So he pushed him down, then noticed the second man was going to shoot him; so he pushed him, and when the guy fell down, he shot him through the leg," Sharon tells Global News from a cell phone in Mazatlan.
Neighbours brought Yves to the hospital shortly afterwards, where he was put in to surgery. The bullet just missed his carotid artery.
Sharon also tells Global News that the two men allegedly approached the RV park’s front office last night where they tied up the unarmed security guard, and threatened that if he did not remain quiet, he would be shot. The men then came directly to the Guay’s motor home, which houses approximately 250 RVs. Sharon says she feels like they were targeted, and wonders if the country is no longer safe for tourists.
“We felt a little uneasy coming down here, but we never thought tourists would get targeted. But, I think that’s a good possibility that more could get hit.”
The couple arrived in Mazatlan January 15th.
Sharon says she’s concerned about how they will return home, since her husband will no longer be able to drive the RV. They hope to return to Canada next week.
There have been several attacks on Canadians in Mexico in recent years.
Foreign Affairs says Canadians should be very cautious, especially when visiting northern Mexico.
